Plenty of cameras can make good photos. Not all of good cameras are worth shooting. But when talking about what elevates a camera from a good camera to a truly special camera, the ability to make a good photograph is almost beside the point. Like the Contax, as long as the shooter knows how to make good photos, the Canon 5D will make good photos. The G2 is much more than that. To stop there would be an undersell.

The whirr of its four-frames-per-second automatic film advance, the thwick of its incredibly quiet shutter, and the bzzz of its speedy auto-focus motor are as appealing to the ears as any camera noise has any right to be.Its ergonomics are deliberate and intuitive. Though it may be a bit too heavy for some users, it retains a compact form factor about the same size and weight as a Leica M and feels dense and solid. Not just a feast for the eyes and the hands, the noises this camera makes are equally intoxicating. There are two kinds of adapters, purely mechanical and electronic adapters which even provide AF with some Sony Alpha cameras. The AF experience is certainly not as smooth as with native lenses. How you focus depends on the kind of adapter you use. At just g and with a very small diameter it is less obstrusive than most adapted 50mm lenses. The Zeiss does not have a focusing ring. Manual focusing with this method works better than I would have expected but can be a bit fiddly at long distances. My first attempt at anything rangefinder-ish was a Contax G2 and that experience almost put me of rangefinders completely. There is no doubt they could, if they so chose. Also, the subject is always looking at the camera with the G, as there is no way to be inconspicuous with it.I can only assume that the manufacturers of these cameras are in such awe of the Leica they do not dare to mount a successful challenge, for fear of toppling their god. With the G, I had to throw away half to two thirds because they were out of focus or poorly exposed. Almost every shot on a roll shot through the Leica is a keeper.

I love shooting film, with no interest in digital, and for close candid documentary style work the Leica M just becomes an extension of you. The battery-less aspects are of a far lesser concern to me as I also use a Bessa R2A, but I will concede that even that body is no Leica. And actually, for the way I shoot, I find the manual focus aspect faster than using the G2. With the move to Leica M, I've never looked back.It just does exactly what I tell it to do, when I tell it to do it.
